On 25th April 2026, we opened the doors to Folk.
For those who have followed Kinfolk Studio over the years, opening a physical shop has always been something we quietly hoped we’d do one day. We just didn’t expect it to happen quite when it did.
The opportunity arose locally and, after many conversations, plenty of planning and a healthy amount of uncertainty, we decided it felt like the right next step for both us and the business.
For years, Kinfolk Studio has lived online, at markets, through workshops and within the homes of our customers. Opening Folk gave us the opportunity to create a permanent space where all of those things could come together under one roof.
A place to discover fragrance, thoughtful gifts, local makers and independent brands. A place to slow down, browse and find something meaningful.
Of course, opening any new business brings questions.
Will people come through the door?
Does the town need something like this?
Have we made the right decision?
The truth is, two months in, we’re still learning.
What we can say is that the reception from the local community has been incredibly encouraging. One of the biggest surprises has been just how many people have shared our excitement for having a space like Folk in town.
We’ve met customers who have followed Kinfolk Studio for years, alongside many who are discovering us for the first time. We’ve had conversations with visitors, neighbours, fellow business owners and people simply curious to see what was happening behind the windows.
More than anything, there seems to be a genuine appreciation for independent businesses creating something thoughtful and different.
That has been incredibly rewarding.
Alongside the Kinfolk Studio collection, one of our favourite aspects of Folk has been introducing customers to the talented local makers whose work fills our shelves. The shop was never intended to be solely about us. From the beginning, we wanted it to feel like a celebration of creativity, craftsmanship and the small businesses that make our region special.
Seeing customers discover a local maker for the first time, pick up a handmade gift, or leave with a story behind their purchase has been one of the most enjoyable parts of the journey so far.
As for what’s next?
Honestly, more of the same.
We’re still gathering information, learning what resonates with customers and understanding how Folk fits into the rhythm of the town. It’s early days, and we’re not in a rush to become something we’re not.
What we do know is that we’d like Folk to become a trusted destination for gifting, a place people return to when they’re looking for something special, and somewhere that continues to champion independent makers and thoughtful products.
Most importantly, we want it to feel welcoming.
A place where people can take their time.
A place that feels considered.
A place that feels like Folk.
To everyone who has visited, purchased a gift, supported a local maker, shared a recommendation or simply stopped by to say hello since April, thank you.
We’re excited to see where the next chapter takes us.
